Edward A. Snyder is the Dean of the Yale School of Management. He is an industrial organization economist who has conducted research on antitrust policy and enforcement, contracting practices, law and economics issues, and financial institutions.

Business is about how we compete and how we cooperate. This focus leads one to consider how fundamental elements of human nature such as self-identification and differentiation are important to a full understanding of business interactions.

I've had the privilege of being involved in two record-setting gifts to business schools - Frank Batten Sr.'s gift of $60M to University of Virginia's Darden School in December 1999 and David Booth's gift of $300M to name the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Business school Deans give long and tortured answers about rankings. My short answer is (a) rankings are an important part of the competitive landscape, and (b) moving up is more fun than moving down. FYI, Chicago was #10 in BusinessWeek in 2001 and has been ranked #1 since 2006.

My philosophy of Deaning has several dimensions. See Musing #1 on MBAs and Faculty for a discussion of how not to manage these two different types of talent. But at its core, I believe in high aspirations, respect for everyone, and personal accountability.

I believe that five mega-trends will shape business going forward. These trends also help explain why I believe that Yale SOM, which is closely integrated into an eminent and purposeful University, will develop the right kind of leaders for the challenges ahead.
